Microneedling vs. Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling

Understanding the Key Differences and Discovering Which Treatment is the Right One for You

Skin rejuvenation treatments have gained significant popularity, offering a range of solutions for common skin concerns like wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven texture. Two of the most sought-after treatments in this field are microneedling and radiofrequency (RF) microneedling. While both procedures aim to improve skin health and appearance, they work in different ways. I get a lot of clients wondering what the differences between these two treatments are, and which one is right for their desired outcome. My hope is that the following write-up will help explain their differences, so that ENHANCED clients can make an informed decision on which treatment is right. As always, make sure you consult with your medical aesthetic provider.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, isa minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing process, which leads to the production of collagen and elastin, two essential proteins for healthy, firm, and youthful skin. How is this performed? A device with fine needles punctures the skin at a controlled depth. As new collagen forms, skin texture improves, scars fade, and wrinkles soften.

What are the Benefits of Microneedling:

  • Minimizes fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improves skin texture
  • Reduces the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks
  • Enhances the absorption of skincare products
  • Requires minimal downtime

Microneedling is an excellent option for those looking to address surface-level skin concerns without going through more aggressive treatments.

What is Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling?

RF microneedling takes traditional microneedling a step further by incorporating radiofrequency energy into the treatment. I call it“Microneedling on Steroids.” The RF energy is delivered through the needles to heat the underlying layers of the skin, which amplifies the collagen-boosting effects of standard microneedling. How is it performed? Like traditional microneedling, tiny needles penetrate the skin, but they also emit RF energy. TheRF energy generates heat in the dermis (the deeper layer of the skin) without damaging the surface. This thermal energy tightens and remodels the skin while enhancing collagen and elastin production. The treatment is customizable (according to your and your provider’s agreed upon treatment plan for the area of concern) to ensure that you achieve your desired results by delivering varied energy levels at tailored penetration depths using state-of-the-art EXION medical technology.

Benefits of RF Microneedling:

  • All the benefits of traditional microneedling, plus deeper and improved skin tightening
  • More effective for moderate to severe wrinkles and skin laxity
  • Suitable for deeper acne scars and stretch marks
  • Can improve skin tone, texture, and firmness more dramatically
  • Longer-lasting results with fewer treatments
  • Mild to moderate downtime (typically a few days)

RF microneedling is perfect for those with more significant skin concerns (like deeper wrinkles or sagging skin), as the RF energy allows the treatment to target deeper layers of the skin for enhanced results.

To recap, there are some Key Differences Between Microneedling and RF Microneedling

  1. Energy

    • Microneedling: Relies solely on mechanical injury from the needles.
    •
    • RF Microneedling: Combines mechanical injury with thermal energy from RF waves, delivering more intense stimulation for collagen production.
  2.
  3. Skin Concerns

    • Microneedling: Best for mild to moderate skin issues like fine lines, uneven texture, and minor scarring.
    •
    • RF Microneedling: Targets more severe skin concerns such as deeper wrinkles, loose skin, and prominent scars.
  4.
  5. Treatment

    • Microneedling: Primarily works on the surface and mid-layers of the skin.
    •
    • RF Microneedling: Can penetrate deeper into the skin due to the combination of needles and RF energy, resulting in more comprehensive skin tightening.
  6.
  7. Results

    • Microneedling: Provides gradual improvements over several sessions and is great for superficial rejuvenation.
    •
    • RF Microneedling: Often delivers faster, more dramatic results, particularly in skin tightening and deeper scar reduction.
  8.
  9. Downtime

    • Microneedling: Usually requires minimal downtime, with redness and slight swelling lasting 24–48 hours.
    •
    • RF Microneedling: May involve slightly more downtime due to the added heat element, with redness and mild swelling lasting up to 3–5 days.
  10.
  11. Cost$$$

    • Microneedling: Generally less expensive, since it does not require the added RF technology.
    •
    • RF Microneedling: Tends to be more costly due to the use of advanced technology and the deeper effects it produces.
  12.
  13. Recommended Treatments

    • Microneedling: 3-5 treatments (more sessions may be recommended depending on the severity of the issue and the individual’s skin response) spaced about 4-6 weeks apart.
    •
    • RF Microneedling: 3-4 treatments initially spaced 4-6 weeks apart, then 1-2 per year to maintain results.

So, Which Treatment is Right for You?

The choice between microneedling and RF microneedling largely depends on your skin concerns and goals. If you're looking for a relatively gentle treatment to improve texture, boost collagen, and reduce fine lines, microneedling might be the perfect fit for you. On the other hand, if you're dealing with more prominent wrinkles, sagging skin, or deeper scars, RF microneedling may offer better results with fewer sessions.

Both are great treatments to maintain and help one age more gracefully. It is always best for you to consult with an experienced licensed skincare professional that can help you determine the ideal approach for your unique skin type and concerns. Whether you're seeking subtle improvements or more dramatic skin transformation, these treatments offer a pathway to healthier, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin.
